“Remarkable” year of grain and steel boosts Seaway season

With just one month left of the season, St. Lawrence Seaway cargo shipments are expected to finish ahead of 2013 after a remarkable year of grain exports and steel imports.

According to the St. Lawrence Seaway, total cargo shipments reached 34.6 million metric tons for the period from March 25 to November 30 — up 5 percent over the same period last year. Seaway management expect the season will close ahead of last year by a similar margin.

NEWS RELEASE

Shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway remained strong in October as North American manufacturers and cities stockpiled vital materials in advance of the coming winter and farmers relied on the waterway to export the new harvest.

According to the St. Lawrence Seaway, total cargo tonnage from March 25 to October 31 reached 29.6 million metric tons, up 4.5 per cent over the same period last year. Robust grain and steel shipments have more than offset a drop in iron ore shipments through the Seaway.

Export/import activity drives St. Lawrence Seaway cargo up 5% over 2013

OTTAWA – Total cargo shipments on the St. Lawrence Seaway have now surpassed 2013 levels by 5 per cent due to strong North American import/export activity.

According to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, total cargo tonnage from March 25 to September 30 reached 24.4 million metric tons.

Grain exports continue to be strong with total shipments (including Canada and the U.S.) reaching 6.8 million metric tons, up 70 per cent over the same period last year.

NY manufacturing boosts aluminum shipments to Port of Oswego

 

Shipments of aluminum products through the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Port of Oswego are expected to increase by 30 percent this year due to strong demand from aluminum sheet manufacturers catering to the automotive industry. 

The Port of Oswego is experiencing record levels of aluminum shipments and is forecasting that more than 120,000 metric tons will be delivered to the port in 2014. The aluminum is shipped by barge from the Aluminerie Alouette facility in Sept-Iles, Quebec — the largest aluminum smelter in the Americas.

Seaway grain shipments surge by 70%

NEWS RELEASE

OTTAWA – The St. Lawrence Seaway has been crucial for companies exporting Canada’s bumper grain crop — with shipments already 70 per cent higher than last season.  And Great Lakes ports and ship owners are now preparing for the next harvest.

According to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, while combined Canada-U.S. grain shipments are up 55 per cent, Canadian grain shipments alone from March 25 to July 31 totaled 3.6 million metric tons, a 70 per cent increase over the same period last year.
