NEWS RELEASE – As the fall harvest approaches for many farmers in the Midwest, grain shipments continue to be strong on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System.
According to the latest figures, U.S. grain shipments via the St. Lawrence Seaway from March 29 to August 31 topped one million metric tons, up 31 percent over the same period last year. The majority of U.S. exports originated from the Port of Toledo and were carry over from the 2017 grain season.

Ottawa, Ontario – As the fall harvest approaches, Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway ships are hard at work delivering the large excess of grain remaining from the 2017 harvest to export markets. Canadian grain shipments via the St. Lawrence Seaway (from March 29 to August 31) totaled 4.3 million metric tons, up 13 per cent over the same period last year.

Ottawa, Ontario – Overall cargo shipments on the St. Lawrence Seaway between March 29 and July 31 totaled 16.5 million metric tons, bolstered by grain exports and Great Lakes construction activity.

Construction materials were also heavily influential in the latest results with a nearly 38 percent increase in asphalt from the same time last year, as well as increases in cement and stone.
