Ottawa, Ontario — The Chamber of Marine Commerce is issuing the following statement in response to today’s announcement by Pierre-Yves Daoust, a pathologist and professor at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), and Émilie L. Couture, a veterinarian with the Zoo de Granby and the University of Montreal on the results of recent right whale necropsies.

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence shipping is critical to the competitiveness and global trade success of Canada and the United States and presents an enormous opportunity for growth that will increase employment and prosperity while at same time benefitting our communities by reducing carbon emissions and transportation bottlenecks.

That’s the message the Chamber of Marine Commerce is sharing with government and policymakers today as the global maritime industry celebrates World Maritime Day.

September 14, 2017 Seaway shipping remains on pace to top 2016

Overall shipping tonnage on the St. Lawrence Seaway is more than 13 percent ahead of 2016, according to the latest statistics through August 31. Iron ore, salt and general cargo shipments through the Great Lakes and Seaway have been strong throughout the 2017 shipping season and continue to lead the way.  

The St. Lawrence Seaway reports that cargo shipments from the start of the shipping season on March 20 through August totaled 19.9 million metric tons – up about 2.3 million metric tons over the same period last year.

September 14, 2017 Diversification paying off for St. Lawrence Seaway; cargo up 13%

OTTAWA, Ontario — Efforts to diversify and expand cargo routes are contributing to a 13 per cent increase in year-to-date cargo shipments via the St. Lawrence Seaway.

According to The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, total cargo tonnage from March 20 to August 31 reached 19.9 million metric tons – 2.3 million metric tons more compared to the same period in 2016.

August 15, 2017 Seaway cargo shipments up 18% in first-half of shipping season

Ottawa, Ontario  –- Iron ore and grain exports continued to drive a St. Lawrence Seaway shipping resurgence in the first half of the shipping season with cargo shipments up 18 per cent over 2016.

According to The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, total cargo tonnage from March 20 to July 31 reached 16 million metric tons – 2.5 million metric tons more compared to the same period in 2016.

The Chamber of Marine Commerce is issuing the following statement in response to today’s announcement made by Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Dominic LeBlanc and Minister of Transport Marc Garneau on temporary mandatory speed restrictions for vessels in in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence from the Quebec north shore to just north of Prince Edward Island.

July 19, 2017 Seaway cargo up 20% as waterway supports economic growth

NEWS RELEASE: Total cargo shipments through the St. Lawrence Seaway are up 20 per cent this year as the marine highway supports business growth from key sectors of the North American economy.

According to The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, total cargo tonnage from March 20 to June 30 reached 12 million metric tons – two million metric tons more compared to the same period in 2016.

July 19, 2017 U.S. iron ore shipments help boost St. Lawrence Seaway shipping by 20%

June 20, 2017 Ship operators support compromise solution for reducing Lake Ontario water levels

(Ottawa, Ontario) — The Chamber of Marine Commerce will continue to work closely with our shipowner members and The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation to support the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board’s decision yesterday to continue flow rates from the Moses-Saunders dam at 10,400 cubic metres per second.   Following several days of continuous feedback, ship captains have consistently reported that they have been able to safely navigate and manage the currents from the increased outflow levels.
