Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney broke ground on the Contrecœur Terminal expansion at the Port of Montréal—a key development that recognizes marine shipping’s role as a central contributor to the nation’s economic and supply chain strength. The Chamber of Marine Commerce (CMC) applauds this development, and looks forward to further such trade enabling initiatives across the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence, Arctic and Coastal trade regions.
“The Contrecœur Terminal expansion is a clear example of how strategic investment in marine infrastructure can unlock economic opportunity while supporting safe, sustainable, and reliable supply chains,” noted Jason Card, Vice President of External Affairs for the Chamber of Marine Commerce. “The CMC commends the federal government’s leadership in accelerating this project through coordinated partnerships with provincial, Indigenous, and private-sector stakeholders, and stands ready to support the realization of more nation building projects like this in the months and years ahead.”
This landmark project will increase the Port of Montréal’s container capacity by approximately 60 percent, making it the largest eastern port expansion in Canadian history and significantly strengthening Canada’s supply chain resilience. By integrating marine, rail, and road connections, the Contrecœur Terminal will enhance the efficiency and reliability of the St. Lawrence–Great Lakes trade corridor—one of North America’s most strategic gateways. The project is expected to generate thousands of jobs, including approximately 4,000 annually during construction, and deliver substantial long-term economic benefits across Canada.
